The DEP's Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation plans to stabilize the mine under homes in North Belle Vernon at no cost. Residents involved must sign a Consent for Right of Entry form by November 30. If not enough people sign up, the project might be delayed or scaled back.

Mine subsidence is when the ground above an underground mine sinks or collapses. This can be dangerous and costly.
